RETREATS
The retreat program at Marian provides opportunities for our students to deepen their relationship with God and with one another in a non-classroom environment. The retreats are catechetical in nature providing the students the opportunity to reflect on personal experience, to hear faith stories of others and to have opportunities for prayer, Mass and Sacraments. The freshman and sophomore retreats are mandatory whereas the junior and senior retreats are optional.
The theme of our Freshman Retreat is Friendship with God and One Another. This retreat focuses on friendship and encourages teens to reflect on their personal relationship with Jesus and what it means to live as a Christian. Students had the opportunity to learn about the qualities of healthy friendships, discuss the importance of living a chaste life and the importance of forgiveness in all relationships, as well as growing in appreciation for their families. The Freshman Retreat is a day long gender specific retreat which enables us to tailor our talks and activities specifically to that gender.
Sophomores continue their journey by focusing on Christ Our Hope. (1 Timothy 4:10 “We have set our hope on the living God.”) Talks and activities focus on particular areas of the spiritual life that stress the call to follow Christ, respond to His invitation and live as His disciple. Students are encouraged to pray, read Scripture and frequent the Sacraments. This is a day long retreat.
Junior retreat focuses on ones’ call to love as they
continue on their journey in faith. They are encouraged to reflect on their
relationship with God, growing in holiness, their gifts and abilities, the
witness of the saints and other role models, being attentive to the Holy Spirit
in their lives, and the importance of seeking the input of those in their lives
as they begin to make various decisions in their life as they are Called to
Love. Students are encouraged to use their gifts and abilities in service to
others now and in the future.
This is a day long retreat.
Senior Retreat focuses on Equipping Oneself Spiritually as they graduate. As they continue on their journey as a disciple of Christ, they are challenged to make good moral choices, live a virtuous life, make prayer, scripture and the sacraments a priority in their life and choose friends that will support their Christian values. (Phil 1:27 “conduct yourselves, then, in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ. If you do whether I come and see you myself or hear about your behavior from a distance, it will be clear that you are stranding firm in unity of spirit and exerting yourselves with one accord for the faith of the gospel.”)
Diocesan High School Retreats: These are held during
the school year and during the summer. Students have opportunities to be
involved in various retreat opportunities offered through the diocese at large,
area youth groups such as the Antioch Retreat Program, retreats through their
parish youth ministries, the Notre Dame Vision Retreats in the summer, high
school discernment retreats with the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual
Adoration. The diocese also offers students the opportunities to participate in
Faith Fest and in a service immersion week that the diocesan Youth Ministry
Office holds in conjunction with Holy Cross College in the summer.
